I own an Amazon kindle. Not the new one, the Kindle 2, but the original model. When I saw that the Kindle was getting released I decided to poke around eBay and see if I could pick up the Kindle 1 in the metaphorical bargain bin. I’ve had it for about five weeks now and I’ve read a couple of books on it, and I’ve got to say, I like it, I love it, I want some more of it.

Ok. That won’t happen again.

But seriously, though. Ebooks, ebook readers, going digital. While I don’t believe we’re going to become a paperless society within the next 7 to 10 years, I think we’re going to get really close. I don’t need to go over the pros of having an ebook reader, most of you know them already (saving shelf space, easy to carry around, carry multiple books easily, can change font size, etc.). Look at iTunes and the iPod. CD’s didn’t go away, of course, but they’re moving in that direction, just like books will be. Personally, I plan to go paperless within the next couple of years. I’ve already gotten rid of my books, having replaced them all with digital copies. What I need to do now is do something with all these graphic novels, but more on that a little later.

Of course, if digital books become mainstream, what will happen to bookstores? I love reading on my Kindle, but I also love wandering around the bookstore, flipping through random books. One of my favorite pastimes is to go to Borders or Barnes and Noble, not to necessarily buy anything, but just to be around the books. And what about book signings? You can’t exactly have Stephen King sign your Kindle, can you? Maybe they’ll become a niche thing. Maybe physical books will become actual collectors items, there certainly won’t be as many of them printed anymore.

And then there’s the pricing. I’ll be honest, I don’t really want to pay the same price for a digital book as I would pay for its physical counterpart. Amazon’s done better with this, but there are still plenty of books that are way over priced. What are we paying for? There’s no production involved. None of these books are exclusively digital, most were printed first and digitized. The production costs of the book is already factored into it’s printed price. So what are we paying for when we buy a digital copy?

Personally, I think the price points for digital books need to be closer to the paperback prices. I don’t think twice about dropping five bucks for a book. Right now Amazon has a thing where they list NY Times bestsellers at $9.99. But what happens when that book drops off the bestseller list? Does it shoot back up to $14.95? It kind of sounds like we’re being penalized for not buying the book while it was popular. And, honestly, you know what? It’s not Amazon’s or the retailer’s fault. It’s the fault of the publishers for overpricing their product.

Regardless of the pricing issues, I’m glad Amazon got in on the ebook thing. It’s going to take a big company like that make it popular. But I can’t help but wonder if Amazon’s days as a digital book distributor are numbered.

Apple already provides you music, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, podcasts, applications, why wouldn’t they get into the book business? And let’s be honest, if Apple decided to get into the ebook business, all the others wouldn’t stand a chance.

But then, Amazon did release a Kindle program for the iPhone/iPod touch. Now you can read an Amazon ebook right on your iPhone. Maybe there’s some kind of partnership forming?

As excited as I am about digital comics, what I’m really waiting for are digital comics. I want to be able to download my Green Lantern every month and not have to worry about losing anymore closet space (And so would my wife, for that matter.). But in order to have a digital comics, you need to have something to read them on and who wants to sit in front of the computer to read comics? What we need is a color ebook reader or maybe a tablet pc that’s not clunky or too heavy or runs on Windows. Apple, are you paying attention? Probably not, they’ll tell you there’s already a Mac Tablet and it’s called the iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, I love my iPhone. I love to listen to music on it, I love to make phone calls on it, I even love to surf the web on it. I do not love reading comics on it.

Some times it’s tough waiting for the technology to catch up with you. I’ve been ready for all this for years now, but it’s hasn’t been until now that it’s become available. I love the future and I think the future is starting to love me back.

It’s funny. Last week I was feeling all lost and slightly depressed over the fact that I had nothing to really contribute for my Friday columns.

Well, that was last week. Since then, my eyes have been opened up a bit.

Much is made of Christianity and how people who subscribe to religion are weak minded followers who can’t think for themselves.. The people that say these things also tend to categorize faith as something else, something not connected with God or any form of religion. These same people go around preaching that religious types need to learn to be more tolerant of the non religious types, even while chastising and criticizing us for believing in something other than ourselves.

So, I have a few things I want to say.

Why is it that believing in God and having faith in Him makes me weak? What is it about my faith that makes you scared? Oh yes, I said scared. Why else do people lash out so violently against Christians? Because they’re scared of us. Because they don’t understand. They don’t understand what it means to believe in something you can’t see or touch or prove with any of man’s rules. And that scares them. Or it makes them jealous. Maybe they wish they could believe like that, but don’t know how and are too scared to ask for help. Hey, look at that, we came back to scared. Interesting.

Our forefathers may have come to America to escape religious persecution, but let’s face it, our God is a jealous God and if you don’t believe in him, you’re out. I can be tolerant of other religions, nonbelievers and whatnot, but at the end of the day I know you guys aren’t going end up in the same place as me. I don’t mean that I’m better than you, but by the grace of my Lord, I’m allowed to go Heaven and you know what? You can go there to, all you have to do is give yourself over to Him and accept Him into your life and believe in Him completely. Now, am I going door-to-door shoving this in people’s faces and trying to save souls? No. That’s not what I feel I’ve been called to do. I am, however, getting up on my soapbox every week and sharing a piece of my mind. Don’t worry, there’s plenty to go around.

Look, I’m tired of people having to apologize for their beliefs and opinions. I’m not going to. Everyone else gets away with blasting their self-righteous, arrogant, pompous opinions across the blogosphere and the world in general. Well, if they can do it and be praised and lauded for it, so can I. I don’t care if my opinion is not shared by the general populous of today.

Look, you want to sit there and subscribe to your little religion of Why and Man Can Do It Better, knock yourself out. There’s not likely anything I can say that will change your mind. You’re probably going to need to be hit upside the head like Paul was. Remember him? Formally known as Saul, went around persecuting Christians like it was his favorite thing to do in the world, which it probably was. Then one day, God said enough was enough and knocked the guy off his donkey and blinded him until he saw things God’s way. Paul ended up writing a couple of books in the Bible. Our God can be a vengeful God too.

Does this make me weak? That I believe in this? That I believe in God? Of course not. It makes me stronger. Am I blinding following something? Well, kind of. That’s part of what it means to be a Christian and to believe in God. It’s supposed to be a blind faith in Him. I don’t know why that is, but that’s the way it is. You don’t like it, fine. But don’t be scared of me or jealous of me. It’s not worth wasting your time.

And what is it exactly that were supposed to be celebrating? Something about rabbits and eggs? They don’t even go together! Well, maybe as a meal, I suppose.

I know, I probably should have done this last Friday. But what can I say? Some times I’m behind the curb. Or maybe, there was a chocolate bunny rabbit who strongly urged me not to write this column or something bad might happen? He was very intimidating.

As I was taught, Easter is supposed to be about the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Remember Him, He died for our sins? On the cross? I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, we’ve been using the iconic imagery of a man on a cross for hundreds of years.

That being said, where did the Easter Bunny and the eggs come from?

Jesus Christ = Easter Bunny? I’m not seeing any connections.

Oh, surprise (please note sarcasm), the Easter Bunny is derived from a pagan holiday. That’s nice. It’s always good to mix worshiping God and pagan rituals together. It spices things up. You just never know when you might be struck by lightening.

The origins of Easter are rooted in European traditions. The name Easter comes from a pagan figure called Eastre (or Eostre) who was celebrated as the goddess of spring by the Saxons of Northern Europe. A festival called Eastre was held during the spring equinox by these people to honor her. The goddess Eastre’s earthly symbol was the rabbit, which was also known as a symbol of fertility. Originally, there were some very pagan (and sometimes utterly evil) practices that went along with the celebration. Today, Easter is almost a completely commercialized holiday, with all the focus on Easter eggs and the Easter bunny being remnants of the goddess worship.

So the bunny rabbit is a symbol for the goddess of spring. Last time I checked, our God was a jealous God. He doesn’t take kindly to sharing. So why in the world are we sharing the resurrection of Christ with an “earth goddess,” who, by the way is not real and is representative of Satan (the bad guy).

But yet there are plenty of Christians out there who wholly embrace the pagan rituals, eggs, egg hunts, displaying the Easter bunny, etc. Why is that? Are they not aware? Technically, that would be considered a form of worship, yet we do it anyway without a second thought. Or is it as long as we keep in mind the real reason for Easter (resurrection of Christ) it’s okay to dabble in these little things, like the eggs and so on. After all, like everyone always says: It’s the thought that counts.

What gets me is how the Easter Bunny and company got hooked with the Resurrection of Christ. We were trying to make Christianity more appealing to the pagans. Rather than raising them up to our level, we sunk to theirs. We took their traditions and beliefs and grafted them onto ours. Is that what being Christian is about? When you’re trying to preach the gospel are you supposed to comprise your beliefs to make it more appealing to the unsaved? That’s ridiculous. It’s stupid. But that’s what happened and that’s still what’s happening today.

And now we’ve got a bunny who died on the cross and rose three days later from an egg as a chocolate bunny.

Isn’t comprising fun?
